Customer stops WhatsApp fraud attempt claiming to be Santander International

Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to trick people into revealing sensitive information. Recently, one of our customers experienced an impersonation attempt that highlights the importance of staying alert and reading security warnings carefully.

What Happened?
The customer received a call via WhatsApp from a man claiming to be from the Fraud Team at Santander International. This method was unusual compared to previous impersonation attempts we’ve seen, which typically use standard phone calls.

During the call, the fraudster told the customer that a fraudulent transaction of £5,400 was pending on their account. To cancel it, the caller requested the customer’s One-Time Passcode (OTP).

The Red Flag
When the customer checked the OTP message, they noticed a clear warning advising never to share the code with anyone, even if they claim to be from the bank. Acting on this advice, the customer challenged the caller and refused to provide the OTP. The fraudster insisted he was from the fraud team and said there was no need to call the bank directly.

The Outcome
The customer ended the call and immediately reported the attempt to us. Thanks to their vigilance and the effectiveness of the OTP warning message, the fraud was prevented.

Key Takeaways

  • Fraudsters may use unexpected channels like WhatsApp and are getting more sophisticated by using company logos as profile pictures to appear legitimate.
  • Always read OTP warnings carefully—they are designed to protect you.
  • If in doubt, hang up and contact Santander International directly using official contact details.

This case is a great example of how awareness and security messages can stop fraud before it happens.
