How your Visa debit card works

Your Santander International Visa debit card links to your Gold Account and allows you to pay, simply and securely. Your card can be used in a number of ways, in person or online:

  • CHIP and PIN payments
  • Contactless payments
  • Verified by Visa payments

How to make a CHIP and PIN payment

  1. Insert your card into the merchant’s card reader so that the microchip can be read by the machine.
  2. When prompted by the machine, enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) to authorise the payment.
  3. The screen on the card machine will confirm the payment has been authorised. You’ve now made your purchase and the transaction will appear on your Gold Account statement in the usual way.

How to make a contactless payment

  1. Look for the contactless symbol.
  2. Remove your card and hold it over the contactless reader until you see the green light or hear the beep.
  3. The reader confirms the payment.
  4. You’ve now made your purchase and any contactless payments will appear on your Gold Account statement in the usual way.

Visit our website, www.santanderinternational.co.uk/personal/products/current-account/ to find out more about current contactless payment limits per transaction.

How Verified by Visa works

All Santander International Visa cards are automatically registered to give our customers an extra layer of protection when shopping online. However, not all online retailers enable Verified by Visa.

Where an online retailer has Verified by Visa enabled:

  1. A Verified by Visa message box will appear on screen after you have entered your card details.
  2. The screen will ask you to choose whether you would like to receive your One Time Passcode (OTP) by email or mobile phone (if applicable).
  3. You will then receive your OTP by email or mobile phone.
  4. Enter your OTP on the Verified by Visa screen, and click ‘submit’. Never share your OTP with anyone, not even a Santander International employee.
  5. A confirmation screen will then appear and you’ve now made your purchase. The transaction will appear on your Gold Account statement in the usual way.
